Bismarck, ND - As part of an effort to keep people from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the Southwest Bismarck Regional DUI Task Force in conjunction with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), will increase enforcement with additional officers assigned to monitor city, rural and state roadways from June 21 through June 30.
“On average, every weeknight between 10:00p.m. and 1:00a.m. one in 13 drivers is drunk,” said Les Witkowski, Major Burleigh County. “Between 1:00a.m. and 6:00a.m. that number jumps to one in seven. With our increased DUI Enforcement periods, our goal is to bring that number down to zero.”
“We have a solid partnership across the state of North Dakota,” says Cody Trom, Sergeant Bismarck Police Department “and by working together to create high visibility enforcement, we are moving towards our goal of deterring motorists from drinking and driving.”
“The average person metabolizes alcohol at the rate of about one drink per hour,” said Marcel Sim, Chief Lincoln Police Department. “Coffee, exercising or taking a cold shower will not sober you up. Only time will. Driving before the right amount of time has passed could get you a DUI.”
To bring the number of alcohol related crashes down to zero, everyone must make an effort to designate a driver and get a safe ride home. The TODD campaign, short for “Don’t Forget to Designate a Driver”, has been at the forefront of prompting safe driving behaviors when alcohol is involved. This public service campaign combines various forms of media to distribute this vital information. Also with this campaign is an interactive website: www.dontforgettodd.com. This site provides information on regional DUI enforcement activity throughout the state including lists of increased enforcement periods, safe ride information, text and email alert options and much more.
“Until zero lives are lost due to impaired driving crashes, we will continue to have heightened patrols,” says Kyle Kirchmeier, Captain North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The Southwest Bismarck DUI Task Force includes the following agencies: NDHP, Mercer, Sheridan, Burleigh, Morton and Grant Sheriff’s Departments, and Beulah, Mandan, Bismarck and Lincoln Police Departments.
